Abstract
Free trade generates number of benefits for economies avoiding trade barriers.
Contrariwise, protectionism produces more economic costs than benefits, it cause more harm than good. The public debate in Bulgaria is focused on consequences of poor competitiveness of Bulgarian companies and economic sectors and is blamed a thing on globalization and free trade. We have heard recently many escalating claims for adopting protectionism as a national trade policy. The main purposes of that claims are revitalizing of internal market and supporting companies in bad financial conditions. Another key
problem of national trade policy is choice between subsidizing and removing trade barriers. There exists a GATT mechanism for dispute settlement. If one country accuses another of malpractice GATT trading rules, it can request a dispute resolution panel. The policies advanced by proponents of protectionism ultimately are based on a number of unproved allegation and myths. Actually, these allegations are the intellectual justification of the isolation and protectionism. Liberalization of trade policy and economic freedom can establish sustainable economic growth of Bulgaria and can create more profitable opportunities for Bulgarian business.
